Hailey Morgan Shepherd, MD

General Surgery Resident

How they incorporate what they learned in the CHESS Surgical Ethics Fellowship into their daily role

“I find myself consistently incorporating the frameworks I learned in the CHESS Surgical Ethics Fellowship whenever I find myself in a patient scenario with an uncomfortable ethical dilemma. I find it extremely helpful to be able to identify the conflicts involved and re-orient myself (and the patient/family members) with the pillars of Autonomy, Justice, Beneficence, and Non-Maleficence – and how each of us may be striving to achieve these values, but prioritizing them differently.”

What CHESS fellowship session held the biggest impact

“Our lecture on Transplantation Ethics and Brain Death. It was extremely illuminating to explore the various aspects of transplantation that have yet to find solutions for the inherent ethical dilemmas involved in the practice.”
