Martin named president of the Society of University Surgeons

Colin Martin, MD, director of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been named president of the Society of University Surgeons (SUS). Martin, who also serves as the Drs. Brad and Barbara Warner Endowed Professor of Surgery, assumed the presidency at the 21st Annual Academic Surgical Congress, a joint meeting of the two leading associations for academic surgery – The Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) and SUS. Together the AAS and SUS boast more than 6,000 members from leading institutions nationwide. He will lead the organization in its mission to promote excellence and leadership in academic surgery.

An accomplished pediatric surgeon-scientist and the surgeon-in-chief at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Martin has held multiple leadership positions within the SUS, including chair of the Membership Committee and member of the SUS Executive Council. His extensive work in pediatric surgery has significantly shaped the field, contributing to advancements in patient care, research, and education.

Martin has also served in the leadership committee of the AAS, and as chair of the membership committee and program committee in the Society of Black Academic Surgeons. He is also a member of editorial boards for leading national and international publications.

“I am honored to begin my term as the 87th President of the Society of University Surgeons,” Martin said at the annual meeting. “This is a tremendous responsibility and is a true honor. Together, we will empower academic leaders and work towards our shared goals.”
